(a) In coal fired power plant, steam enters an adiabatic turbine with inlet conditions at 6 MPa, 600°C, and 80 m/s and leaves with exit conditions as of 50 kPa, 100°C, and 140 m/s. Take note that the surroundings temperature to the turbine is 25°C and the steam turbine generating power of SMW. Determine: i) The mass flow rate of the steam. [5.16 kg/s] ii) The power potential of the steam at its inlet conditions, in MW. [7.91 MW) ii) The reversible power, in MW.[5.81 MW] iv) The second law efficiency. [86.1%) Assume steady-flow and neglect changes in potential energy. 1 V, -80 ms Steam turbine P. - 6 MPa T1 =600°C 5 MW 2 V. - 140 m/s P2 = 50 kPa T: +100°C (b) The steam turbine in part (a) is now considered to be modified with more expansion stages added so that it generates a power of 5.8MW. With this modification, the steam inlet condition remains the same but the steam exits at 10 kPa, 50°C, and 140 m/s. Perform an analysis and justify whether it is worth considering such a modification. Why? (Compare the second law efficiency of both cases)
