Question B.2 Question B.2.1 An alternator is driven at a speed of 1500 rpm by gearing from the front end of a slow speed diesel engine crankshaft as shown in Figure B2.1. Gear 2 147 teeth 1900 rpm Spur gearing Alternator Main 21 teeth engine 100 rpm Carrier Gear Epicyclic gearing Figure B2.1: A marine gearing unit Gear 1 on the crankshaft drives gear 2 in the spur gearing. Gear 2 drives the carriers of the epicyclic gear (the ring gear is fixed). The speed of the main engine is 100 rpm and the speed of the alternator is 1500 rpm. i) Calculate the ratio of the spur gearing (I.e. the speed of gear 2/speed [5 marks] of gear 1). ii) Calculate the number of teeth required for each carrier in the [5 marks] epicyclic gearing III) Assuming that the ring gear in the epicyclic gearing is free to rotate [5 marks] and the sun gear is fixed (i.e. the alternator shaft is fixed) in Figure B21. calculate the rotating speed of the ring gear. Question B 2.2 Briefly explain reasons why residuary resistance and skin frictional [5 marks] resistance are measured separately in model tests. May 2022 Page 7 of 12
