Question 3 (a) A client is considering the use of an open loop GSHP system to provide heating in conjunction with an underfloor system. They are unsure as to whether to use the ground source system or to use a gas boiler. Write brief notes comparing the advantages and disadvantages of ground source system and gas boiler. (32%) (b) The client is unsure what COP could be achieved by the GSHP system. By making assumptions concerning condensing and evaporator, ground source water temperatures for a GSHP in heating mode, use a R134a PH chart provided to calculate the GSHP COP that can be achieved. (40%) (c) The client would like to understand the relative performance of a ground source heat pump (GSHP) compared to a condensing boiler at full load. Using the COP calculated in (b) and by making simple assumptions calculate the relative revenue cost and carbon emissions for a gas boiler and a GSHP. (28%) Assumptions for Question 3: For grid derived electricity: - Associated CO2 = 0.44548 kgCO2/kWh, - cost = 10.5 p/kWh; For gas: - Associated CO2 = 0.18404 kgCO2/kWh, - cost = 3.5 p/kWh.
