Question 2 A water chilling plant using H2O-LiBr absorption refrigeration cycle as shown in Figure. 2(a), is operating with the following temperatures; • Evaporator Temperature = 10 °C • Condenser Temperature = 30 °C • Absorber Temperature = 25 °C • Generator Temperature = 90 °C The flow rate of the solution delivered by the pump is 1.0 kg/s. The weak and strong solution concentrations are 52% and 66%, respectively. (a) Determine the mass flow rate of the refrigerant and the mass flow rate of the solution returning from the generator to the absorber? (10%) (b) Determine: (i) Heat supplied in the Generator QG (10%) (ii) Heat rejected in the Absorber QA (10%) (ii) Heat rejected in the Condenser Qc (10%) (iv) Heat supplied in the Evaporator QE. (10%) (c) Calculate the ideal coefficient of performance (COP IDEAL) of the cycle? (10%) (d) The system is modified by the connecting a heat exchanger between the generator and the absorber. If the parameters surrounding the heat exchanger are as depicted in Figure-2(b), determine the enthalpy of strong solution at inlet to the absorber (at point d) and discuss the risk of crystallisation as result on installing the heat exchanger. (30%) (e) Give two advantages of a single effect Water/LiBr absorption cooling in comparison with a conventional vapour compression cooling system of an equivalent cooling output.
