You are asked to evaluate the design and manufacture of a light and strong composite beam. To help you do this you decide to determine the relevant material index for this material. You assume that you can manufacture a glass fibre reinforced unidirectional composite with an epoxy resin, with a fibre volume fraction of 0.6. You assume that the strength of E-glass fibres is 2500 MPa and the strength of epoxy resin is 70MPa, you also assume that the density of glass fibre is 2.5 gcm-3, the density of cured epoxy resin is 1.25 gcm-3. Use the equations listed below to help you determine the material index of the composite when loaded along the axial direction of the fibres of the composite, be conservative when calculating the axial strength of the composite.
