Temperature Distribution Plot (15) • This plot is meant to visually show the spatial distribution of temperature over the plate (i.e. where it is hotter, where it is colder). The best way of presenting this information is as a colour coded two-dimensional contour plot. A good alternative is a three- dimensional surface plot. For any of these options, it is important to not only show the relative location of each point, but also include the physical dimensions of the plate, showing the actual measurement locations. It is not acceptable to simply plot each of the temperature traces on the heating profile. This makes it virtually impossible to visualise the spatial distribution over the plate. Similarly, a two-dimensional plot with the measurement locations along the x-axis doesn't accurately represent the two-dimensionality of the plate. Sometimes, students use a dot plot where the size of the dot at each point indicated the temperature. This type of plot does not readily show spatial temperature distribution. • Irrespective of the type of plot chosen, the temperature axis should be chosen appropriately to show the relative hot and cold areas.
