Department of Civil Engineering and Geomatics
Program: Diploma in Civil Engineering Code: D3CIVL
Assessment for GA 1 and GA5 for ICP360S Date: 14/03/2022
Brief
Background
The construction of low cost residential tree house needs to be
analysed, its needs to be completed in 12 months. The Occupancy
level of the building is defined in the drawing.
A contractor needs to construct numerous low cost residual tree
houses. The contractor, due to his experience sized the members for
the structure, but needs to ensure that the member sizes are
sufficient to withstand the necessary applied force. Due to you
knowledge and expertise, they consult you and ask you to assist in
analysing the tree house to ensure that it is safe and meets the
codified standards / guidelines. The Occupancy level / class of the
building is defined in the drawing.
Project Objectives
The main objectives of the project assignment is to expose you
timber design through gaining hands-on experience on the
distribution and transfer, load calculation and analysis of
real-life open-ended structural analysis projects.
Project Teams
This is an individual task, which requires you to submit an
individual report. You are however encourage to discuss the overall
concept with your colleagues. This project assesses GA-01 and
GA-05. In order to assess you competence, you are required to
submit a detailed individual report. The rubric will guide you how
the assignment will be marked to show whether you achieved
competence in both GAs.
Project Tasks
GA 1: Load Calculations, Load transfer, Assumptions, Limitations,
Analysis and Drawing Annotations.
Review the Tree house in terms of applied load(s) and its
transferring mechanism and provide a neat and clearly annotated
drawing in Figure 1. Mentioned all the relevant codes of practice
together the relevant clauses used in the calculation of the
load(s) on the timber tree house (include only wind load on ROOF
and show the analysis thereof).
Describe the general design problem, constraints, and approach.
Comment on the issues related to selection of the load from
SANS:10160-2 for the structural system. Refer to Annexure XXXXX and
justify your selection.
Shows the drawings for load transfer, determine the design gravity
loads acting in accordance with the SANS-10160-2 and wind load with
SANS-10160-3 (only on roof). Show the critical combination of load.
Explain the issues related to their selection and location within
the structural system.
Make structural idealizations of the existing structural system,
providing detailed explanations of your assumptions and
limitations. Show primary and secondary beam in the load
calculation and select a representative 2D for BEAM analysis and
distribute calculated load on the beam and calculate the reaction
on the column. Through approximate analysis techniques, find design
member forces.
GA 5: Load Transfer must be shown and load calculation on each of
the beam needs to be specified for the Prokon modelling and
validation.
Make a simple computer model of this idealized 2D structural beam
using PROKON and perform an analysis to determine design member
forces. Compare the PROKON results with those obtained from your
theoretical analysis and comment on their differences. Using the
design member forces obtained, draw neat shear force and bending
moment and review it and discuss your results. Provide detailed
drawings Overall Structural Deliverables.
Also provide a short discussion on what methodology Prokon is based
on.
Q&A during contact sessions:
• Report. A typed/hand, detailed final report will be submitted on
14 th April 2022. The final report should discuss the structural
project tasks and conclude with a recommendation. More detail below
• Description of the General Design Problem, Constraints,
Functions, Design Life, and Other Relevant Considerations

Conclusion: This is an individual task. Peer to peer discussion is
encouraged but your final submission will be individual work and
all submissions are subject to a plagiarism check.
