A zoned embankment dam is constructed on a foundation consisting of a normally consolidated saturated clay. The dam cross section includes a vertical clay core and two gravelly shells in two sides of the core. a) The dam is constructed rapidly. What type of parameters (i.e., drained or undrained) would you use for the clay core, shells, and foundation to perform end-of-construction stability analysis? Recommend a type of triaxial test (UU or CU or CD) for each of these zones that can reasonably represent the shear strength of that zone for the end-of-construction stability analysis. b) What type of parameters (i.e., drained or undrained) would you use for the clay core, shells, and foundation to perform steady-state seepage with normal pool stability analysis? Recommend a type of triaxial test (UU or CU or CD) for each of these zones that can reasonably represent the shear strength of that zone for this case. c) In addition to end-of-construction and steady-state seepage with normal pool, list and briefly discuss about two other loading conditions that need to be considered for design and analysis of this earth dam.
