I would have several worries. First, I would expect Netflix to
offer me further training to improve my performance in my existing
role if they were unhappy with the work I was currently generating.
Then I would be more inclined to leave my job and provide
severance, but two weeks and limited training are not enough to
enhance or track performance. In case things do not work out, the
company already has someone trained. She would also be expected to
report weekly to her supervisor on her progress and how it is
affecting the company. Two-thirds of Alice's annual pay should be
severance, coupled with the continuation of health insurance and
retirement. She shouldn't have to settle for less, especially
because she was fired with little warning and few options. Sharon's
2nd response: They may agree to pay just about 65 percent of her
salary as severance, but include other advantages like 18 months of
ongoing health insurance or job placement assistance. She must
inform Alice that they value her as a person and the job she has
done for the company, but that it is time to part ways and it is
not personal. Before deciding on Alice's severance payout, the
budget for such packages must be reviewed. Alice's 3rd objection:
She does not want to leave the company and start over. She also
does not want to have to learn a new organization because she is so
familiar with Netflix. The location and pay rate are further
factors that keep her with Netflix. Relocation may be the greatest
option for Alice because the company is moving in a different
direction than her current position requires. This would benefit
both parties since Alice would still be working for a company she
knows and Netflix would profit from her knowledge in a different
field. A possible compensation cut would need to be negotiated, but
extra perks may be added.
