Consider an electron trapped in
a one-dimensional box of
length l. Evaluate energy of an electron in the
lowest energy state and compare it to the thermal energy (kT, here
k is Boltzman constant and T absolute temperature in Kelvin).
Consider following values of l and T and
determine whether the electron system behaves classically or
quantum mechanically (a) l=1,102,104 Å
and at temperature T=.1,10,100,1000K. (b) If log(T) vs.
log(l) data were plotted, what should be the value of
the slope?
