(30 points) Parallel plate capacitor A parallel plate capacitor is constructed of two square plates, size 100 cm x 100 cm. The plates are separated by a very small distance so that any edge effects can be neglected. A charge of Q= +22 nC is placed on the lower plate, with the equal and opposite charge placed on the upper plate. (a) Sketch the parallel plate capacitor and the resulting electric field lines. (b) What is the magnitude [in N/C] of the electric field between the plates? (c) A proton of charge q=+1.6 x 10-19 C is placed in the space between the plates. Show on your sketch the direction of the force FE experienced by the proton due to the electric field. (d) What is the magnitude of electrostatic force FE that the proton experiences [in N]? (e) Now imagine that the proton is being pulled downward by a gravitational force Fg = 3.0 × 10-¹4N. Add this new force onto your sketch above. What magnitude of charge on the capacitor plates (instead of the initial Q=+22 nC) would you need to put on the capacitor plates such that the proton experienced a net force of zero? (i.e. such that the electrostatic force and the gravitational force exactly cancelled out and the proton just levitated there)?
