Let's apply conservation of energy to the collision of two protons. Two protons, each with rest mass M = 1.67 x 10-27 kg, have equal speeds in opposite directions. They collide head-on and then come to rest. The collision produces a º meson (also called a neutral pion) with mass m= 2.40 x 10-28 kg (Figure 1), which is also at rest. Find the initial speed of each proton and the initial kinetic energy of each, expressed as a fraction of its rest energy. Part A-Practice Problem: In this example, suppose the colliding particles are electrons instead of protons. Find the initial energy of each electron, and show that the energies and speeds are in the extreme relativistic range. Express your answer in megaelectronvolts. IVE ΑΣΦ ? MeV Submit Request Answer
