4. Three long straight wires are each carrying different amounts of current. 1₂ = 0.6 A 13 = 0.4 A 4₁ = 1.2 A 25 cm 10 cm Let's think about the net force exerted on Wire 3... a) What direction does Wire 1's magnetic field point at Wire 3's location? In other words, 35 cm to the right of Wire 1, what direction does Wire 1's magnetic field point? b) What direction does Wire 2's magnetic field point at Wire 3's location? c) Calculate the magnitude of Wire 1's magnetic field at the location of Wire 3. Also calculate the magnitude of Wire 2's magnetic field at the location of Wire 3. Show your calculations.
d) What is the magnitude and direction of the net magnetic field at the location of Wire 3? e) We know the magnitude of the magnetic force exerted on a current-carrying wire of length L is given by F = ILB sin 0. To find the force per unit length exerted on a wire we simply divide this equation by L to get force per unit length = IB sin 0. Calculate the force per unit length exerted on Wire 3. Show your calculation. f) What direction does this force point? g) What direction does the net force exerted on Wire 2 point? You don't need to do any calculations, but briefly explain how you determined your answer.
