While conducting an experiment with a 532 nm wavelength green laser, you notice a slight shift in the image generated and suspect the laser is unstable and switching between two closely spaced wavelengths (this phenomenon is known as mode-hopping). To determine if this is true, you decide to shine the laser on a double-slit apparatus and look for changes in the pattern. Measuring to the first bright fringe on a screen 0.5 m away, with a slit separation of 80 µm, you measure a distance 3.325 mm. When the laser shifts, so does the pattern and you then measure the same fringe spacing to be 3.375 mm. Note: Drawing a picture will help. a. Is the shifted wavelength greater than or less than 532 nm? Explain. b. What wavelength is the laser "hopping" to?
