A 46-year-old female client presents to the healthcare provider
with the report of a burning sensation in her chest once or twice a
week. The client shares that the sensation usually occurs while she
is lying down at night and lasts approximately 20 minutes. The
client expressed that she has taken calcium carbonate antacid
(TUMS), and it has been effective. The electrocardiogram (ECG)
displays no irregularities. A friend of the client recommended that
the client keep a daily log of what food is consumed and when the
burning sensation occurs, and the client brought the log in for
review.
The nurse is preparing a teaching plan about antacids for the
client.

Antacids or H2 Blockers
1Raise pH with acid-neutralizing effect
2 Work in parietal cells in the lining of the stomach
Inhibits histamine to prevent acid production
Work in stomach lumen
Must monitor orientation levels of older adults
Side effects are constipation and diarrhea
Often used for reflux
