A patient with schizophrenia is having a conversation with a
nurse
Here are a few pieces of the exchange
Nurse: Why don’t you like the groups?
Sally: Because I don’t want to talk to anyone
Nurse: You don’t like talking to anybody?
Sally: No, I don’t like to talk to people.
Nurse: Do you listen at groups?
Sally: Yes, and I hear what they’re saying. They’re all talking
about me. They think they can poison me but they can’t.
Nurse: What makes you think they’re poisoning you?
Sally: Because they’re all together. Even the staff
Nurse: What do they feed you for breakfast?
Sally: Well sometimes they give us pancakes and that’s not
bad
Nurse: Do you like pancakes?
Sally: I do. I wish they had them every day.
Sally: You know she had a baby and then they went on the
rollercoaster.
Nurse: Who had a baby?
Sally: They had a baby.
Nurse: Who is they?
Sally: You know who they are. Now you are one of them.
Nurse: Sally, do you hear voices?
Sally: Yes
Nurse: What are they saying?
Sally: They told me not to tell (says a few times). I don’t want
to talk anymore
