Duflo and Udry (2004) study resource allocation within households in Côte d'Ivoire, where usually husbands and wives farm separate plots, and there is some specialization by gender. The authors use the fact that different crops are differentially sensitive to particular kinds of rainfall shocks to analyze intra-household resource allocation in the country. The following table gives the effect of rainfall on income from crops. Dependent variables Male cash crop (1) Female income (2) F statistics (p value) All rainfall variables are significant 1.99 (0.014) 2.53 (0.000) Current year rainfall variables significant 1.18 (0.315) 2.43 (0.005) Past year rainfall variables significant 2.79 (0.005) 2.64 (0.001) Rainfall variables significant different from: Male cash crop NA Female income NA 2.10 (0.009) The following table presents results from regressing differences in the logarithm of total expenditures on changes in the logarithm of income from male cash crops, and female crops (predicted using rainfall variables). Q120 1 point possible (graded, results hidden) Anthropologists believe that in Western Africa the source of income in the household (i.e. husband or wife) mauy also determine its uses. Looking at the second table, which of the following statements is true? The results reject the anthropologists' claim and the unitary model of the household The results support the anthropologists' claim but reject the unitary model of the household The results reject the anthropologists' claim but support the unitary model of the household The results support the anthropologists' claim and the unitary model of the household Submit Q12e 1 point possible (graded, results hidden) In the second table, a 10% increase in income from female-controlled crops is associated with a 4% increase in expenditure on purchased foods while a similar increase income from male non-yam crops is associated with an 3% decline purchases of food. What is r? (Restrict your answer to one decimal place e.g, enter 0.3333 as 0.3) Submit Q9F 1 point possible (graded, results hidden) Following from the previous part, what will be the optimal labour supply under the fixed-rent contract? (Enter your answer exactly) Submit Q9G 1 point possible (graded, results hidden) In the framework of this question, a higher output would lead to a higher economic surplus (difference between the value of output and its cost of production).
