Problem #4: Molecular Orbital Theory (20 points) Draw the complete molecular orbital diagram for carbon monoxide, CO. A complete molecular orbital diagram has the atomic orbital diagrams on the left and right sides and the molecular orbital diagram in the middle. Use the nitrogen monoxide orbital diagram on pg. 463 (section 11.3) in your textbook as a reference for the formation of CO's molecular orbitals and their energy placements. For the orbitals, be sure to do the following somewhere (doesn't have to be on the diagram itself) [8 points]: a) Indicate which orbitals were used to create 62, and 62.* (probably obvious) b) Indicate which orbitals were used to create 02p and 02p* (maybe not as obvious). Be specific as to 2px, 2py, and/or 2pz. c) Indicate which orbitals were used to create 2p and p* (maybe not as obvious). Be specific as to 2px, 2py, and/or 2pz.
