Reaction with bromine
Procedure: Dissolve or suspend about 50 mg of the compound in
2-3 ml water. If the compound is insoluble in water, use ethanol
instead. Add drop wise saturated aqueous Br2 and observe after each
drop any visible reaction. Positive reaction is observed if the
color of Br2 rapidly disappears on several additions. Reaction
product may precipitate.
Conclusion: alkenes, alkynes aromatic amines, phenols react with
Br.
