The employees at the Driftwood Furniture Factory were asked to
indicate the method of instruction they would prefer for an
upcoming safety course. Out of 326 total employees, 142 preferred a
traditional classroom environment, 83 preferred a self-paced
workbook, and 101 preferred computer-based instruction. The
employee job classifications were as follows: 38 were clerical, 172
were production, 42 were maintenance, 43 worked in the warehouse,
and 31 were supervisors. Using the following cross tabulation
table, calculate the expected frequencies and the chi-square
statistic (χ2) to determine if there are statistically significant
differences (at the .05 level) in frequencies in relation to the
variables.

What is the calculated (observed) value of χ2 ?
If the critical value of χ2 at the .05 level is 15.49, what
decision will you make about the null hypothesis?
What does this statistic reveal about the relationship between
the two variables (preferred method of instruction and job
classification)?
Helpful reminders
E (expected) = (row total) (column total) / (grand total)
χ2 (observed) = ∑ ((O-E)2 / E)
