Task 2: (Adapted from real experiment) A set of students were
divided into two groups. Within each group, the subjects were put
into smaller teams and asked to complete a series of tasks. The
treatment group completed tasks while being subjected to painful
and uncomfortable stimuli. The control group was not subjected to
any painful stimuli. Afterwards the students were asked to
numerically rate their level of trust of the individuals in their
smaller teams. The data is in pain2.csv or pain2.xlsx. 1) List the
conditions that you must satisfy to perform an inference in this
situation. Reference your text or notes if needed. Include
indicating whether the data is paired or two independent samples (3
pts). For the project, assume the conditions are met. 2) The
researchers would like to determine if there is a difference in the
mean trust scores between the two groups. Perform a significance
test to test this claim at a 1% significance level. a. Write the
null and alternative hypothesis to be tested. (2 pts) b. What type
of test are your performing: Left tail, right tail or two tail? (1
pt) c. Is the appropriate test statistic a z value or t value? (1
pt) d. Compute the means and standard deviations you will need to
compute the test statistic (2 pts). e. Compute the appropriate test
statistic. (3 pts) f. Compute the p-value. If you are using a t
value, use 37 degrees of freedom. (2 pts) g. Based on the data what
decision should you make about the null hypothesis? (1 pt) h. What
conclusion should you draw about a difference in means between the
two groups? (1 pt)
