Example #2: The Director
of HIM at Mercy Hospital speaks about the profession to a group of
high school students. Answer: No

1. A nurse asks if it is alright to release a woman's diagnosis to
her employer. You ask if the woman has given her permission and the
nurse says no. You tell the nurse it is alright to go ahead and
release the diagnosis.

2. On a resume, a new graduate lists his credentials as RHIA.
However, he has not yet taken the RHIA examination.

3. NYS law requires that the names of cancer patients be reported
to the state health department. A health information manager does
not like this requirement and urges her local state representative
to change the law. However, the manager continues to report the
names in the meantime.

4. An intoxicated patient comes to the health information
department to have disability papers completed. The patient smells
of alcohol. The health information manager yells profanity at the
patient and tells her to get out of the department. The patient
leaves and the disability papers were not completed.

5. Medicare requires that patients have a physical examination
within 48 hours of admission to a hospital. The health information
manager tells the physician that it will be alright to wait until
58 hours after admission.
6. An attorney calls the health
information manager and asks for a copy of a patient's health
information. The attorney does not have written authorization
from the patient.
7. It is 4:55 p.m. and the health
information manager usually goes home at 5:00 p.m. Today, the
manager's son is playing soccer at 5:30 p.m. A physician
comes to the office with an urgent need for information about one
of her patients. The patient is in the Emergency Department.
The manager states she will help the physician tomorrow and
she leaves work at 5:00 p.m.
8. One of the employees in the health
information management department notices a nurse is not following
proper procedures in handling medication errors. The employee
likes the nurse and does not want to get him in trouble. As a
result, the employee does not tell anyone about the
nurse.
9. Joan is elected to be the treasurer
of the Central New York Health Information Management Association.
As checks come in, she deposits them to the Association
account (within 24 hours), she writes checks for Association
expenses within 2 days of the receipt of the bill, and she prepares
a treasurer's report for each meeting.
10. Tom is assigned to a team to
evaluate a new computer system. Before the meeting begins,
Tom gossips to the group about another team member who has not yet
arrived and who he thinks was fired from her previous
job.
