Consider the data transmission in two different waveguide structures: (I) the parallel-plate waveguide, and (II) the square waveguide - see Fig. 2. Assume that both waveguides are air- filled and low-loss. (a) for the digital operation with the bit rate R = 200 Mbit/sec (with pulse ('1') / no pulse ('0') every T = 1/R seconds; the "pulse" is a nearly constant voltage during time T, and "no pulse" is zero voltage during T), which waveguide would give much better performance - and why? (b) What about binary amplitude modulation of a 7 GHz sinusoid? (Here, for each data bit equal to '1', we transmit a 7 GHz sinusoidal burst of duration T, and for each data bit equal to '0', there is zero voltage during the time T). (II) (I) Z parallel metal plates (separation a = 6 cm) a = 6 cm ¹ I Figure 2 ↑ a-3 cm a-3 cm. square metal guide (side a = 3 cm)
