The construction of a hall in Adelaide, South Australia uses
timber framing. The frame system is shown in Figure 3b. For design,
the top chords can be considered to have intermediate restraints
only about the major axis at mid-height. The connections at the
ends of the top chords are through two (2) M12 bolts in 14mm
diameter holes. The top chords have a cross-section of 140x45mm and
are of seasoned hardwood grade F14. The top chords are 4.5m
long.
Analysis of the roof truss shows that the following unfactored
axial compression loads are present in the top chord: a permanent
load of 60kN and imposed action of 90kN considered as “loads of 5
months duration” due to use of truss in crane activities. Note that
short-term (ψs), long-term (ψl) and
combination factors (ψc) can be taken as zero.
Determine if the top chords are suitable to support the applied
loads considering that they support a tributary area of
18m2.
