Rick sent Tom a letter offering to sell his car to Tom. Tom left the letter on his desk and Bill saw it. Bill wrote to Rick and said that he, Bill, wanted to accept Rick's offer. What result? There is no contract because Tom bought the car. Bill's letter is a valid acceptance of Rick's offer. Rick is now bound to sell the car to Bill. There is no contract because Rick did not make the offer to Bill.
