The moving observer method is used to measure traffic data of 1.64km section of s/c by three observers (in addition to a driver) when the test vehicle travels on the link from a North position to a South position and then back from South to North making seven test runs in each direction. The three observers recorded the details of the relative flow of both streams for each run of the test vehicle as shown in the Table below. Using the field measured data and suitable formulae shown below, calculate the following for each of the North-South (NS) stream and the South-North (SN) stream. Run Number/ Time of commencement Direction Travel time Stopped (Mins) of journey time (X)-No. of vehicles traveling in opposite direction (Y)-No. of vehicles that overtake test vehide (Y)-No. of vehicles overtaken by test car (Mins) SOUTHBOUND (NS) 9:20 2.08 0.00 27 9:30 2.00 0.00 26 5 9:40 2.17 0.27 28 9:50 1.97 0.00 25 9 10:00 2.25 0.30 30 10:10 2.12 0.00 28 10:20 2.17 0.00 31 1.83 0.00 38 2.03 0.15 42 2.00 0.00 40 1.93 0.00 1.97 0.00 1.80 0.00 2.22 0.20 41 11 13 NORTHBOUND (SN) 10 12 14 X+(Y-Y₂) la+w (Y-Y Q Q is the stream average flow. is the stream mean journey time. Exercise: Sketch all the normal directions of traffic through the two types of junction shown below and show all conflicts points (split into crossing conflicts, diverging conflicts and merging conflicts). Compare the number of corresponding conflicts of the two junctions. Cross Roads Junction Crossing Conflicts Diverging Conflicts Merging Conflicts Total of Conflict Points Left-Right Staggered Junction Crossing Conflicts J Diverging Conflicts Merging Conflicts Total of Conflict Points LSB-CEDA A Exercise: Draw a sketch showing the conflict points of a simple roundabout and compare with those of the above two junctions. r
