Since these animals became extinct even before man lived, scientists can only estimate their weight. They often based their estimates on fossilized remains and analysis of bone structures, and then scale it with the weights of existing large animals or the published estimated weights of dinosaurs under the same type. Sauropods were said to be the largest of all dinosaurs and the largest of all the land animals that have ever lived. The structure of its body is consisted of "a small head on an extremely long neck, a long, massive body housing an enormous gut, thick pillar-like legs to support the torso, and a very long, tapering, often whip-like tail" (Encyclopedia Britanica, n.d.). Larger species of sauropods reached as tall as 19 feet. Elephants are the largest land animals existing today. If elephants could weigh as heavy as 15,400 lbs and could reach a height of 13 feet, how heavy could sauropods have weighed?
