Task Instructions Design Project 1 will involve the preliminary design of 700 m of new two-lane rural road (formation width= 16 m, lane width = 3.5 m, design speed = 80 km/h) through undulating terrain. The roadway will consist of three straight sections that are joined by two horizontal curves. You will need to undertake all necessary design calculations for the road and supply all necessary drawings. All
design drawings in Design Project 1 must be individually hand drawn (final submissions to be drawn using 0.4-0.5 mm black ink-no pencil on page!). Student AutoCAD drawings are not allowed for this project. All calculations must be written by hand (but you do not need to use drawing ink for these-pen or pencil is fine - but make it neat!) Your submission should include an A3 title sheet (this sheet must include the project title information, a list of the Drawings and Calculation sheets included in submission, and a title box with your name and student number - look for examples online if you have no experience with this) and a blank back cover sheet (A3). All drawings shall be A3 (borders and title block must be included on all drawings). calculation sheets, Schedule of Chainages and Schedule of RLs schedules can be A4 and these should be inserted and stapled (top left corner) between the two cover sheets. The individual sections of Design Project 1 are as follows: 1. Title page sheet with drawing list and blank back sheet (all drawing pages must be A3) 2. Page 2 is the A3 Layout Plan (supplied). Fill out all relevant title block information on A3 Layout Plan (Plan) provided including your name and student number (clear and neat writing). 3. Plot the road centreline traverses from Ch.0.000 - IP1-IP2 - Ch.700.000 on the A3 Layout Plan provided (at a scale of 1:2000) from the data supplied in Table 1. Table 1-Schedule of Traverses Description Distance (m) Bearing Ch.0.000 to IP1 151.611 44 013 IP1 to IP2 240.074 78° 56' 43 IP2 to Ch.700.000 317.979 120 30 47 Curve 1 (TP1 & 2) Radius 150m Curve 2 (TP3 & 4) Radius 200m RL 126.813 Existing Creek Bed 4. On separate A4 sheets, calculate the chainages of the four TPS and include these in your submission titled TP Chainage Calculations. Plot the two horizontal curves on the Plan. 5. On separate A3 sheets (one for each curve) in a landscape orientation, plot the traverse lines at a scale of 1:1000 centrally around each IP point and then plot each of the curves showing both TPs and parts of the straights (Figure 1). For each sheet, show the calculations for Transition Curve Lengths and mark the position of these lengths on each curve. Then show the calculations for the length of the Superelevation Transition Lengths and mark these positions on the curves. Show your calculations for any required Shift and Widening and plot the True Centreline on the curves (Figure 1). Finally, Calculate the Chainages and the Superelevation required at the SS, TS, TP and SC points and label these on the curves. Include these calculations and drawing sheets in your submission.
