Problem 1. (20 points) A "simplified" liquefaction analysis is carried out for a site using the SPT device. We will look at the results for one sample at one boring, and relevant parameters are: Earthquake magnitude (Mw): 7.5 Peak horizontal ground acceleration at ground surface: 0.300 Soil type at sample depth (USCS): SP The soil extends from the ground surface to a depth of 8 m. Depth from surface to water table: 2.0 m Depth from surface to sample: 4.0 m Average total unit weight above water table: 18 kN/m³ Average total unit weight below water table: 20 kN/m³ Borehole diameter: 100 mm There is no sampler liner Assume the rod length is equal to the depth of the sample plus 1.5 m. No correction is made for the level of stress (Ko=1.00). The measured SPT is 10 blows/foot. The cyclic stress ratio (CSR) is the estimate of the cyclic seismic shear stress at the level of the sample, and the cyclic resistance ratio (CRR) is the estimate of the resistance to cyclic shear stresses on the basis of the test results. The factor of safety (FS) is CRR/CSR. Calculate CSR, CRR, and FS for this SPT test. State clearly any assumptions you need to make.
