Input-Output models can be a very useful tool to evaluate some aspects of sustainability performance. The current war situation in Eastern Europe showed society's vulnerabilities in the energy and food sectors as both countries involved play a substantial role in those sectors (as a wheat producers/exporters, source or transit of oil and gas). Using the EIO-LCA 2007 US producer (USEEIO model) and the Canada 2002 Producer model, answer the following questions. Be careful in selecting the appropriate industrial sector/subsector. If each, the US, and Canada, decide to ramp wheat production by $1 billion dollars (or CAS1.27 billion, at the current exchange rate) Which is the total economic impact of such increase in activity in the sector expressed in billion dollars of each country currency? a) How much energy will used due to the increase activity in the sector and what is the % of renewable energy used (biomass + wind + solar + hydro) for the US? What is the contribution of the fertilizer (and associate activities) sector to that consumption for each country? b) Which are the top three conventional air pollutants released on a mass basis? c) Based on the total greenhouse gas emissions (expressed in mega tons of equivalent CO2), which are the top three emitting industrial sectors for each economy? d) Write one short paragraph discussing where it will be more sustainable to produce the wheat to satisfy the world demand? You must submit a pdf of the model outputs (top 10 sectors) along with the answers. Use Word processor for your written responses. (15 points total, 3 points each).
