QUESTION 1 A bar of dimensions 79 mm in width, 88 mm in height and 256 mm in length is subjected to a temperature change of -49 degrees Celcius and an tensile load of 8 kN. The co-efficient of thermal expansion is 12.6(10-6) m/°C and the modulus of elasticity is 80 GPa. Calculate the change in length due to the combined thermal and axial load. Give the answer in mm and give the answer to three decimal places. If the answer is negative include the neagtive sign when entering your answer.
The assembly shown in Figure 1 consists of a brass core (diameter d,= 6 mm) surrounded by a steel shell (inner diameter d₂ = 7 mm, outer diameter d3 = 9 mm). A load P = 10 kN compresses the core and shell, which have length L = 85 mm. The moduli of elasticity of the brass and steel are Eb= 100 GPa and Es= 200 GPa, respectively. P Steel shell Brass core Save All Answers K s to save all answers.
Determine the following values: Abrass= Asteel = Obrass Osteel = = mm2 (up to two decimal places) mm2 (up to two decimal places) MPa (up to two decimal places) MPa (up to two decimal places)
