Read scenario and answer questions below.
The administrative assistant has been with the organization for
almost a year, and it is time to
complete the annual review based upon your observations of the
employee’s performance. See
the list of critical incidents below.
2/2: Asked good questions during the orientation and made a
positive first impression. Seems
to fit in well with company and coworkers.
2/7: Observed phone interactions—pleasant and professional.
3/1: Attended and completed computer training.
4/12: Stayed late to prepare materials for April quarterly
meeting.
5/28: Booked flights for quarterly meeting—late booking date
resulted in increased costs.
6/4: New marketing brochure went to final production with incorrect
contact number.
7/21: PowerPoint slides for my presentation at the quarterly
meeting were outstanding.
8/17: Quarterly meeting logistics were well organized.
9/26: Proofing of new catalog was two days late.
10/18: VP of marketing found errors in text of new marketing
catalog.
11/1: Received complimentary call from director of sales about
marketing materials
completion.
12/17: Organized marketing information packets for call-in
prospects on own initiative.
1/12: Missed deadline for mailing dated promotional offer to
existing customers.
1/29: Conducted PowerPoint training session for department
employees during lunchtime.

The company has invested a significant amount of time and money in
training, and you’re a
little worried about the discussion because you have noticed some
areas for improvement. This
position was exceptionally difficult to fill, so you want to make
it work with this person.
Because you want to be prepared for your discussion, work with a
partner or small group to
document what you want to say to the employee when you meet. What
are some of the
employee’s strengths? What are areas for improvement? How will you
address the performance
issues?
