Instructions
1. Count the number of pennies that turned up heads, and record
this number in Data Table 1 in the half-life row for “1.” These are
the parent pennies. Record the percent of parent pennies
in.
2. Count the number of pennies that turned up tails, and record
this number in Data Table 1. These are the daughter pennies. Record
the percent of daughter pennies in Data Table 1.
3. Place only the parent pennies (that turned up heads)
back in the beaker. The total number of parent and daughter pennies
will always remain the same
4. Graph the data on graph paper (page 9), or use a graphing
calculator or spreadsheet to graph the data. • The number of
half-lives is represented on the x-axis. • The percent of parent
pennies is represented on the y-axis. • The curve through the data
points is an example of exponential decay. • The ratio of the
radioactive isotope (heads) to the daughter product (tails)
indicates how many half-lives have occurred.
