Question 14 (a) Distinguish between scalar and vector quantities. I (b) A man attempts to swim directly across a river of width 15.0 m. The man swims at a speed of 1.4 m si relative to the water, but the river flows in a direction perpendicular to the river banks at a speed of 5.6 m s' relative to the bank. 1. Determine the resultant velocity of the man with respect to the bank. ii. Determine the distance the man will have moved down the river before he reaches the other bank. (c) A ball is thrown at a velocity of 18.6 ms at an angle of 40° above the horizontal and from a height of 9.35 m above horizontal ground. i. Determine the maximum height reached by the ball above the ground. ii. Determine the time taken for the ball to reach its maximum height. iii. Determine the total time taken for the ball to reach the ground. iv. Determine the horizontal distance travelled by the ball when it hits the ground. v. Determine the kinetic energy of the ball as it hits the ground if its mass is 0.45 kg.
