Case Study:
31.1 Rob was a model child, cooperative, pleasant, and enjoyable
until he turned 17 years old. It all seemed to start when he began
a campaign to see every science fiction movie ever made. Soon he
was speaking an "interplanetary space language that no one but he
could understand. About 6 months into his outer space-oriented
lifestyle, Rob quit school and began to spend his days "attending
intergalactic conferences of great minds." His family became
worried when Rob refused to bathe or change his clothes for weeks
at a time. Often they would enter the room to find Rob argue
animatedly with the lamp of listening with Interest to the wall.
When an outburst of unprovoked anger resulted in injuries to his
younger sister, the family sought counseling.
1. What do you think is the family's first priority with
Rob?
2. What do you think the mental health care team's first
priority would be?
3. What signs do you think would indicate a need for an
inpatient psychiatric setting?
