In Montag, Jones, and Smith (2015) the researchers plotted the
total number of types that are produced in child-directed speech
and children’s books, finding that children’s books contain a
greater number of word types than child-direct speech. The above
graph compares 100 young adult novels (e.g., books written by JK
Rowling, Judy Blume, etc…) and 100 literature novels (e.g., books
written by Margaret Atwood, Ernest Hemingway, etc…). The bottom
panel contains the accumulated total number of tokens across the
novels, while the top panel contains the accumulated total number
of types.
