There is a wall of 14.0-m-high, 5.50-m-wide, and 18.0-cm-thick separating a room and the outside. The wall is made of the material with a thermal conductivity (k)=0.970 W/m-°C. The temperature of the room is kept at 26.5 °C by a heat pump. In a certain afternoon, the outside temperature is 5.50 °C. The combined heat transfer coefficients inside and outside the room are hj=18.5 W/m²°C and h2=49.4 W/m2.°C, respectively, including the effects of radiation. a) Determine the rate of heat loss through the wall in that afternoon. (5 marks) b) In the same afternoon, someone installed glass wool insulation with k=0.034 W/m-°C on the inner surface of the wall. To find out the thickness of the insulation, you do a measurement of the outer surface temperature of the wall. You find that the temperature is 6.20 °C. Determine the thickness of the insulation. (5 marks) c) It costs $9000 to install the insulation in Part b and the insulation is expected to last for 2 years. The COP of the heat pump is 4.52. The electricity cost is $0.360 for each MJ (i.e. 106 J). Do you think it is worth installing the insulation? Support your claim with appropriate calculations. (4 marks)
