1.You are a worker in a group home where four residents with
disability live. Because of staff shortages you have worked two
straight 10 hour shifts over the past two days. Two residents have
important appointments in Sydney the following day and your manager
has asked you to drive them to Sydney. You are very tired and
exhausted and worried about your ability to make the drive
safely.
2: You are working as a support worker with Home Support
Services Inc. You have been supporting Violet, who has a physical
disability and uses a wheelchair for her mobility, in her own home
for three years and have a strong relationship with her. Violet is
a widow, and her children live and work overseas. Eight months ago
Violet was diagnosed with stage 3 cancer. You have observed the
changes in Violet, physically and emotionally, since then. Violet
is in considerable pain and discomfort, despite the best efforts of
medical staff. She knows that she does not have much longer to
live. Last week Violet was teary, and told you that she did not
want to “end up in that dying place” (referring to the local
palliative care facility). She wanted to have the opportunity to
die at home. She knows that there are ways to “do this myself” and
asks you to find out more.
3: You are employed as a Team Leader of volunteers at a
community centre program. A free community lunch is held twice a
week, up to 50 people living in your community attend the lunches,
including people with disability, older people and refugees. A team
of volunteers organise the lunch with your support, and most have
been involved with the Centre for many years. After the lunch last
week, Akeela, one of the people attending, complained about a
conversation she overheard between two of the volunteers. Akeela
tells you she heard the volunteers making racist comments about
Africans and their large families moving into the area, relying on
handouts and free lunches.
For each of the three scenarios, answer the following
questions:
1.List and discuss two professional practice issues raised in
each scenario.
2.Choose at least two examples from the following list and
describe their relevance to the breach/potential breach referred to
in each scenario: -relevant legislation -regulations -standards
-ethical principles -Conventions – e.g. Human Rights, UNCRPD
3.Identify and briefly describe any policies and procedures that
are directly relevant to the scenario/breach and that you could
refer to for further information.
4.Identify and describe two strategies that you could implement
to ensure that staff/volunteers are familiar with the
breach-related issues and are able to maintain compliance.
5.What specialist advice or other sources of information could
you utilize to ensure your response was current and consistent with
Industry standards?
