(b) The van der Waals interaction energy between two atoms in vacuum obeys the following equation: с Dº U(D)= where C is the van der Waals coefficient and D is the distance between the atoms. In a cartesian coordinate system an atom is at the origin and a semi-infinite line with atomic density y extends from x=d to x=00. Derive an expression for the overall potential energy experienced by the atom at the origin.
