(b) A vertical preload of 80 kPa is applied to a large-extended soft clay layer with a thickness of 14 m. The vertical and radial coefficients of consolidation (cy and ch) of the clay are 2 m/year and 5 m/year, respectively. Both top and bottom boundaries of the clay layer are permeable. Prefabricated vertical drains (PVD) are used to accelerate the consolidation, which are installed in a square pattern with a spacing (S) of 1.5 m. The PVD has a thickness (a) of 4 mm, a width (b) of 100 mm, and a length of 14 m. Assume the smear zone diameter is equal to three times of the equivalent diameter of PVD, and the permeability of the smeared clay is half of the permeability of the undisturbed clay. Calculate the average degree of consolidation of the clay layer three months after the application of preload. Relevant equations are given in the Appendix. (9 Marks)
