Consider Fig Q1, which shows a so-called double cover butt joint with single rivets to connect two plates. The plates are 210 mm wide and 12 mm thick and shall withstand a load P = 245 kN. The rivets have a diameter of dr = 20 mm. The allowable stresses for the rivet are as follows: Tallow = 75 MPa; Opearing = 180 MPa; Otensile = 100 MPa. (a) Calculate the load to shear one rivet. (b) Calculate the load to crush one rivet. (c) How many rivets are required in this design? (d) Consider the possible failure modes for this joint design. What is the maximum load for each failure mode of this rivet joint? Use the layout in Fig Q1 as rivet arrangement, neglecting the cover plates. (e) Determine and evaluate the safety factor of the joint design. (f) Without changing the number / specification of rivets and based on your design calculations, make three targeted suggestions to increase the safety of the design. What is the largest possible safety factor for the required load P = 245 kN? BE Figure Q1: Example of double cover butt joint with single rivets.
