EG6050 Individual Negotiated Learning 2021/2022 2. (a) Briefly explain the reason(s) of using fins in heat transfer equipment. [8 marks] (b) A rod of wrought iron (thermal conductivity k = 57 Wm-1K-1) has a diameter of 12.5 mm and a length of 250 mm. It is heated to 400 K at its base and is exposed to ambient air with a temperature of 300 K along the rest of its length. The surface heat transfer coefficient is 9 Wm-2K-1. Determine: (i) The temperature of the rod half-way along its length without accounting for the end effect. [8 marks] (ii) The heat transfer from a single fin. [5 marks] (iii) The fin efficiency. [4 marks]
