In the 1996 movie Twister, a cow is shown flying thanks to a massive tornado (not a spoiler to the plot of the movie and no animals were harmed). Inspired by this premise, we will investigate the efficiency of this transportation system for cattle by calculating the velocity of the cow relative to the tornado and relative to the ground. VTornado = 138 m/s ө 3150 500 m Figure Q3 The velocity of the Tornado (Figure Q3) relative to the fixed coordinate system is (as shown) 138 i m/s and is constant. The Tornado is dragging the cow along with it. The cow is considered, in this example, as rotating around the tornado at a fixed distance of 500 meters in the xy-plane (we ignore the z component). At the instant shown, the cow is at an angle 0 = 315º relative to y. As the cow rotates around the Tornado, the angle 0 decreases at a rate of 10 degrees per second. Determine: (a) The velocity of the cow relative to the Tornado (in i, j coordinates). [10] If the cow was to rotate in the opposite direction at a speed of 10 degrees per second: (b) The velocity of the cow relative to the ground (in i, j coordinates). [10]
