Aim: The objective of this assignment is to understand the usefulness of mathematical modeling and simulation of physical systems in the design and analysis of mechanical systems. Equipment / Software: MATLAB Objectives: On completion of this assignment, students should be able to: 1. Use the MATLAB software to do mathematical modelling of physical systems (using the Transfer Function model of Spring-Mass-Damper system) 2- Use MATLAB to solve physical system models (solving Spring-Mass-Damper differential equation using MATLAB) 3- Use SIMULINK to simulate response of system (solving Spring-Mass-Damper differential equation using SIMULINK) Deliverables: A complete report containing MATLAB/SIMULINK files and results.
The suspension system for one wheel of an old-fashioned pickup truck is illustrated in Figure 1. The mass of the vehicle is mi= 0.5 kg and the mass of the wheel is m2= 1 kg. The suspension spring has a spring constant kı = 0.5 N/m and the tire has a spring constant ka= 1 N/m. The damping constant of the shock absorber is b= 1 N.s/m. The Simulink software is used for modeling, simulating, and analyzing dynamic systems. Simulink provides a Graphical User Interface for building models as block diagrams. Simulation of the modeled system is done by mathematical integration methods. We will use Simulink to solve the Spring Mass Damper Equation derived earlier and simulate the system. Create a Simulink model representing the equation of the motion. Use step-input and plot the results using scopes in the Simulink (one is out of position yı & y2 and another one is out of velocity y, and y2). Note that you will need to obtain the mathematical model (equations of motion) first. You may change the simulation run time to 1000 seconds or ger (if needed to analysis your results). y.
