2 Case Scenario: Perspective of an Environmental Pollutant (100 Marks] In this test, you are expected to use a case-study of methyl parathion to demonstrate how principles, road maps and available resources can be used to facilitate the deployment of risk assessments and information available in local, regional, national or international sources and their extrapolation to the conditions prevailing at national levels as a basis for decision-making on environmental management of chemicals. As part of the test, you are required to carefully read the applicable portions of the document as indicated below towards identifying, characterizing, conducting an exposure assessment and risk characterization processes appropriate to the scenario at hand. Read: WHO Human Health Risk Assessment on Chemical Hazards [PDF] (Refer to Chapter 7: Pgs 67 - 77). Questions: Environmental Management of Chemical Contaminants From the information at hand, provide answers to the following questions: 1) What is the identity of the chemical of concern? [2] 2) As a risk assessor/ environmental manager, what are the questions you would ask based on the case at hand? [10] 3) As an environmental manager/ risk assessor, discuss why the formulation of the chemical under study is potentially harmful to the environment and to humans. [20] 4) Explain the ways through which people could become exposed to the chemical under study. [20] 5) Provide a road-map for this scenario under the following headings; a) hazard identification, b) hazard characterization, and c) exposure assessment. [10] [10] [10] 6) In your own words and as a professional in your domain, summarize the outcomes of your desktop investigations. [8] 7) Highlight 2 strategies that you would employ in mitigating the challenges of the pollutant under study to the environment. [101
