(d) Cement deep mixing columns are used to improve a soft clay layer with a thickness of 11 m. The diameter and length of the columns are 0.6 m and 11 m, respectively. The centre-to-centre spacing of columns is 1.6 m in a regular triangular pattern. The compression modulus of the columns and clay are 120 MPa and 2 MPa, respectively. Assuming equal vertical strain of clay and columns, estimate the vertical compression of the improved clay layer under a vertical pressure of 120 kPa. (4 Marks)
