The underground utility tunnel is a concrete cut-and-cover tunnel constructed in Dune Sand and Colma Sand. The tunnel will require a 10-m deep excavation retained with a sheet pile wall. The sheet piles extend 6 m beneath the base of excavation Dune Sand y = 20 kN/m3 '=35 5 m 10 m Utility Tunnel Colma Sand Y = 19 kN/m3 +'= ? 6 m During site investigation, exploratory borings were drilled. Advanced soils tests were performed on samples extracted from the proposed base of excavation, 5 m below the top of the Colma Sand layer. The state of stress at failure in the Colma Sand is given below.
370 kPa 70 kPa 150 kPa 70 kPa (a) Calculate the resultant active and passive earth force acting on the vertical wall per unit meter and draw the pressure distribution on the sheet pile wall below. On your drawing, distinguish which pressure is active and which is passive. [12 points] (b) of the Colma Sand had a friction angle equal to 40 degrees, how would the magnitude of active pressure applied to the wall change? Provide a qualitative explanation for your answer in 1-2 sentences. [3 points]
