Problem 2 [30 marks] A sheet pile will be installed into the sandy soil. The left-hand side ground will be excavated after sheet pile installation and the elevation difference between two ground levels should be 6 m (Fig). (a) Draw the pressure distribution and determine the minimum length of H when the groundwater tables of both sides are located at the level A (no anchor). [15 marks] (b) Draw the pressure distribution and determine the minimum length of H when the right-hand side groundwater table is located at the level A but the left- hand side groundwater table is located at B (no anchor). [9 marks] (c) Is this structure stable if H=2 m, the anchor force F=200 kN/m and the ground water condition is the same as b)? If it is not stable, determine the minimum length of H. [6 marks]
Assume that the rotation center of the sheet pile is at the end of the pile and ignore the overturning failure. Use the factor of safety of 1.5 for the passive earth pressure calculation (Kp,design= Kp/FS). (y=moist unit weight; Vsat=saturated unit weight) 1 m Anchor ►F 1.5 m V A .
