EXERCISE 29.1 In a small group, discuss the staffing needs of a very busy pediatric hematology and oncology unit for a particular night shift. The patient care staffing needs of this unit are very high, including three new post-bone marrow transplant patients. Today the unit has extra staff on duty, and over the last few days the department has been very busy and short-staffed. Every- one worked together as a team to provide excellent care on these challenging days. Hospital resources are scarce, and if extra staff are left on duty, the unit will be over budget. How does the manager motivate the staff by starting a critical conversation that will engage them in understanding the need to contribute to unit cost- effectiveness? How would you want to hear this conver- sation? What might make staff be concerned that the message may suggest insincerity in addressing their concerns?
