Although I agree that the source of the issue (preventing the
disease) must be fixed, I don't necessarily agree that it has to be
prioritized over 'managing diseases in hospitals'. I believe
additional funding is needed in both areas because as much as we
need to prevent some of this preventable diseases to happen, we
must also not forget about the ones who still need to be treated
and provide them as much resources as possible. Also, prevention is
definitely a higher priority for underdeveloped countries who may
not have easy access to clean water, electricity, etc but for other
first world countries it is not the case. Because of this, a one
size fits all approach to just target prevention vs managing
disease may not work.
The issue I see about universal healthcare is that people cannot
agree on how it is to be funded. It seems like people who have the
means may have the mentality that why should they take on the
burden of paying for other people (through additional taxes) while
the people who may not be able to afford healthcare is obviously
wondering why can't the government support them as they cant.
Furthermore, budgeting prioritization, specifically for US, puts
much more emphasis on military/defense spending when it can be put
towards healthcare.
I don't think Universal healthcare can be done on a global level
but I think each country on its own can do it. In the US, Medicaid
is available which provides health coverage for people with limited
income. As opposed to just covering for people with limited income-
why cant this just be applied to everyone and people who does not
meet the minimum income threshold just pays for it with additional
tax? Individuals are already taxed based on their income so the
higher their income, the higher tax they already pay so maybe some
of that tax money can be allocated towards healthcare. As is,
employees are already paying insurance through their work so as
opposed to that money going towards insurance companies, it can be
directed to the government in form of tax. This is likely more
complicated than this hence the reason it has not been solved but
as citizens it is our duty to help push the ideas to reality
through voting or by influencing our leaders.
